GIS
Many Local Government (LG) policies, plans and operations depend upon accurately maintained location-based information. The increasing responsibilities placed on Local Governments to manage local infrastructure and the increasing amount of data created and collected, requires sound work practices supported by well designed infrastructure.
A significant proportion of information collected and stored by Local Governments has a spatial (geographic location) reference. This data is disparate, and the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) enables such data to be integrated with other information. Utilising GIS to integrate data and maps provides planners and decision makers with a tool to make informed decisions.
The Linking Councils and Communities (LCC) Program contains a discrete Geographic Information System subproject that seeks to provide the necessary tools and data for Local Governments to assist in the decision making process and management of related issues.
Linking Councils & Communities GIS Subproject Objectives
The objectives of this subproject are to:
- Assist Local Government in Western Australia to gain access to spatial information by providing appropriate, reliable and efficient systems for accessing spatial data and integrating this data into Local Government business processes.
- Ensure that data provided is accurate, relevant and reliable to both Local Government and Local Government stakeholders.
- Allow Local Government stakeholders, including the community, to use spatial tools to search and query Local Government and associated data.
