Telecommunications & Connectivity

A "strategic enabler" for fulfilling the LCC Vision is that Local Government has suitable arrangements for "connecting" to the outside world.
Internet Connectivity for Local Government must take into consideration many factors including:

  • Availability of, and the cost of bandwidth
  • Efficient use of the available bandwidth
  • Security issues including prevention of malicious attacks and leakage of private information

Having undergone extensive evaluations of market options, the Program is able to assist Councils in selecting appropriate technologies and carrier services for member Councils. Further, a "managed gateway" solution has been developed specifically for use by Councils to effectively administer their internet connection and related services including the following features:

  • Central mail server with virus scanning (internal Exchange mail servers supported)
  • User management directory (LDAP)
  • Gateway configuration to allow access to remote services as required (eg Telnet access to innopac.liswa.wa.gov.au).
  • Routine backup of all central services and emails.
  • Regular maintenance and system updates of central services and remote gateway machines
  • Internet Connection Redundancy
  • Intrusion Detection
  • User Statistics
  • Windows Proxy Automatic Detection
  • Web Proxy
  • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Relay
  • Firewall
  • Network Address Translation
  • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
  • Time synchronisation timeserver
